1. How to test the quality of the fiber patch cord  


Fiber patch cord manufacturers perform a series of tests during the design and manufacturing process to provide customers with the high-quality fiber patch cord. These tests for the fiber patch cord are critical for any type of fiber network. Both suppliers and end users need to understand these tests to better judge the quality of the fiber patch cord and ensure the feasibility of its applications.


2. Test methods to ensure the quality of the fiber patch cord


(1) 3D test: guarantee of the high-quality connector end face


The 3D test is key to ensure the performance of fiber connectors. When manufacturing fiber patch cord components, suppliers will use 3D interferometers to check the end face of the fiber connector and strictly control the size of the connector end face. The 3D test mainly measures the radius of curvature, vertex offset and fiber height.


The values measured by the 3D interferometer will vary according to different polishing methods and types of the fiber patch cord. However, the tested optical fiber patch cord should meet or exceed the industry-recognized standard geometry of the end face.


(2) IL and RL tests: key tests for optical deployment


Insertion loss refers to the loss of signal power that occurs in the transmission system due to the insertion of a device. Return loss is the power loss that occurs when part of the signal is reflected back to the signal source due to the discontinuity of the transmission link.


Tests of insertion loss and return loss are very important for both the manufacturing process and the installation process. For fiber patch cord suppliers, the insertion loss and return loss of the fiber patch cord should meet the corresponding standards. Also, the insertion loss tester and the return loss tester are usually used to check whether they are within the normal range to ensure end users can receive qualified products.


Besides using the insertion loss and return loss values as a reference to design fiber links and select other equipment or components, end users can also test themselves if tools are available. In this way, installation staff can quickly troubleshoot and identify faulty system components.


(3) End face test: ensure the cleanliness and smoothness of the end face  


Optical fiber cleaning refers to the cleaning of the end face of the fiber connector. In the past or now, the cleaning of the end face of the fiber connector is an indispensable step in the maintenance of the fiber. Manufacturers usually use the fiber end face tester to check whether there are contaminants, scratches, or cracks on the end face of the fiber connector.
