The Difference Between Fiber Optic Adapter and Connector

Publish Time:2022,01,05

Ⅰ. The types of the fiber optic adapter

According to the different fiber optic connectors, the fiber optic adapter can provide the corresponding adapter parts of the fiber optic connector. The following are applicable fiber optic connector models

1. FC

FC is the abbreviation of FERRULE CONNECTOR, indicating that the external reinforcement method is a metal sleeve, and the fastening method is a turnbuckle. The earliest FC-type connector used the butt ends of the ceramic contact pin.

This type of connector has a simple structure, its operation is convenient, and the manufacture is easy. Still, the fiber end is more sensitive to fine dust and prone to Fresnel reflection, making it difficult to improve the return loss performance. Later, this fiber optic adapter adopts a contact pin (PC). The butt end surface is spherical, and the external structure has not changed, so the insertion loss and return loss performance have been greatly improved.

2. SC

Its shell is rectangular, and the structural dimensions of the contact pins and coupling sleeves used are the same as those of the FC type. Among them, the end face of the contact pin mostly adopts the PC or APC type grinding method; the fastening method is the plug-in bolt type without rotation. This optical fiber adapter is cheap and easy to plug and unplug. The contact fluctuations in insertion loss are small, the compressive strength is high, and the installation density is high.

3.  LC

It is made by a modular rabbet jack (RJ) latch mechanism, which is easy to operate. The pins and sleeves used are half the size of ordinary SC, FC, which is 1.25MM. This can increase the density of optical fiber connectors in the optical fiber distribution frame.

4. MTRJ

With the same latch mechanism as the RJ-45 LAN electrical connector, the optical fiber is aligned with the guide pins installed on both sides of the small sleeve. In order to facilitate the connection with the optical transceiver, the connector ends face optical fiber is a double core (interval 0.75MM) arrangement design, is the next generation high-density optical fiber connector mainly used for data transmission.

Ⅱ. The difference between fiber optic adapters and connectors

Main features: The optical fibers are connected by the fiber optic adapter through the internal open sleeve to ensure the highest connection performance between the optical fiber jumpers. In order to be fixed on various panels, a variety of fine-fixing flanges are also designed.

The conversion optical fiber adapter can connect different types of optical fiber jumper interfaces and provide the connection between the APC end faces. Double connection or multiple connections can increase the installation density. The optical fiber connector is a device that can be disassembled (movable) between the optical fibers. It precisely connects the two end faces of the optical fiber to make the light energy output by the transmitting fiber be coupled to the receiving fiber to the maximum extent and minimize the impact on the system due to its intervention in the optical link.
